The nitro groups on the molecule are able to bind to proteins, which blocks their activity and prevents them from carrying out cellular functions. This leads to cell death as a result of an inflammatory response. (E)-Methyl 3-(2-Nitrophenyl)Acrylate has been shown to be an inhibitor of calcium channels in the heart and brain, which may make it useful for treating conditions such as high blood pressure.
