Phenamacril is a synthetic antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of protein by binding to the ribosome. It has been shown to have antiviral and antifungal activity against yeast and filamentous fungi. Phenamacril also has antibacterial and antiparasitic activity. The drug is active against a number of bacteria, including Gram-negative bacteria, as well as some Gram-positive bacteria. It is not active against acid-fast organisms such as mycobacteria or rickettsiae. Phenamacril may be used in life sciences research to study protein synthesis in microorganisms.
