CGP 12177 hydrochloride is a catecholamine that acts as an agonist at the alpha-1 adrenergic receptor. CGP 12177 hydrochloride binds to the agonist binding site on the alpha-1 adrenergic receptor, activating Gs proteins and stimulating adenylyl cyclase. This increases intracellular levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP) and activates protein kinase A (PKA), which phosphorylates proteins such as glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) and protein kinase C
