Polycarbamate is a sealant and chemical ionization reagent that reacts with aldehyde groups in urine samples to form an ester linkage. This reaction can be detected by the presence of a peak corresponding to the methyl group at m/z = 93, which is characteristic of polycarbamate. The elimination rate of polycarbamate from the body is proportional to the concentration of aldehyde groups present in urine. Polycarbamate has also been used as a coating material for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.
