It binds to the receptor for epidermal growth factor (EGF), which is overexpressed in many cancers, and inhibits its function. Cyclo(Arg-Ala-Asp-D-Tyr-Lys) is also able to inhibit the production of nitric oxide by inhibiting the synthesis of arginase. This peptide has also been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells by altering the mitochondrial membrane potential and activating caspases 3 and 9.
