(1R,5R,6R,7R)-7-(4-Hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-3-methoxy-6-methyl-5-prop-2-enylbicyclo[3.2.1]octane (known as cyclocycline) is a natural product that was first isolated from Streptomyces sp. in the 1970s and has been used extensively in the treatment of acne since then. Cyclocycline inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. It binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division.
