(-)-3,5-Dicaffeoyl quinic acid is a caffeic acid ester of 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid. It is a natural compound that has been shown to protect neurons from neuronal death in vitro and in vivo. (-)-3,5-Dicaffeoyl quinic acid is an inhibitor of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) and can prevent cell death induced by reactive oxygen species. This compound also inhibits the activity of sesquiterpene lactones and chlorogenic acids which are implicated in inflammation. In addition, (-)-3,5-Dicaffeoyl quinic acid increases the intracellular pH level by inhibiting H+/K+ ATPase activity, which may be due to its ability to bind to the catalytic site of this enzyme. The optimum concentration for (-)-3,5-dicaffeoyl quinic acid is 10 μM.
