Hexokinase-1 is an enzyme that catalyzes the first step in the glycolytic pathway by phosphorylating glucose to form glucose-6-phosphate. It is a major control point for regulating blood sugar levels and has been shown to be involved in the regulation of metabolic homeostasis. Hexokinase-1 is inhibited by its substrate, glucose, as well as by other competitive inhibitors such as 2-deoxyglucose and glucagon.
