Epiberberine chloride is a prodrug of berberine. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of diarrhea. This drug is metabolized to its active form, berberine, which can inhibit intestinal motility by blocking the action of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors. Epiberberine chloride also acts as a weak antagonist of the nicotinic receptor and may be used to treat Parkinson's disease. The drug is absorbed quickly after oral administration and excreted by the kidneys unchanged or with metabolites in urine.
