Silver acetylacetonate is a nanoparticle that has a particle size of less than 100 nm. It is made up of silver ions and an organic polymer matrix, which can be dissolved in organic solvents. The stability of the metal chelate depends on the chemical structure of the ligand. Silver acetylacetonate is used to treat acne because it has been shown to reduce the production of sebum and the formation of comedones (blackheads). This drug also reduces inflammation by inhibiting pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-2. The stability of silver acetylacetonate also depends on its optical properties. It absorbs light with wavelengths between 300 nm and 700 nm, which are longer than visible light wavelengths.
