Holmium sulfate hydrate is a non-toxic, inorganic compound that is soluble in organic solvents. It is used as a chemical reagent for the separation of lanthanide metals from other elements and for the purification of rare earths. Holmium sulfate hydrate is produced by dissolving holmium oxide, which is obtained from the mineral monazite, in concentrated hydrochloric acid. The product is precipitated by adding sodium citrate to the solution. This precipitate can be filtered, washed with water and dried. Holmium sulfate hydrate has a high reactivity with oxygen, nitrogen and silicon atoms and cannot be stored in deionized water or hydrochloric acid.
