It is a dianhydride and can be used as an intermediate for the synthesis of polyimides. 2,7-Dimethylpyrene is also used in the production of polyphenylene sulfide and polybenzobisoxazole. This compound has been shown to undergo aromatization reactions with oxygen to form benzenoid adducts.
