3-[Bis(methylthio)methylene]pentane-2,4-dione is an anthranilic acid derivative that acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase. The compound has been shown to be effective in the treatment of phenylketonuria and other disorders involving excess levels of phenylalanine. 3-[Bis(methylthio)methylene]pentane-2,4-dione has also been found to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. It is also used in the synthesis of other compounds, such as piperidines and hydrazides.
