It has been shown to inhibit proton release from glial cells and extracellular Ca2+ influx. 4-Octanamidobutanoic acid also inhibits glutamate activity and increases gamma-aminobutyric acid levels. This drug is used in the diagnosis of neural disorders, such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, by altering dopaminergic pathways. 4-Octanamidobutanoic acid is also used as a research tool for studying biochemical mechanisms of pain in animals.
