(E)-Methyl 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)but-2-enoate (HMBA) is a coumarin derivative that inhibits the activity of enzymes and has been shown to inhibit locomotor activity. HMBA is a competitive kappa-opioid receptor antagonist, which has also been shown to have potential as an analgesic agent. It has been shown to be effective in vitro assays using rat and human cells, demonstrating its ability to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as cyclooxygenase 2, lipoxygenase, and glutathione S-transferase. HMBA also displays potent inhibition of surface methodology for the inhibition of esterases.
