4,7-Di(2-thienyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DTBZ) is a vinylene molecule that has been studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and photophysical measurements. It exhibits fluorescence lifetimes that are longer than those of other vinylenes. DTBZ is soluble in organic solvents and can be used as a light emitting substance in heterojunction photovoltaic devices. This molecule also has high efficiencies when used as an organic optical material. The functional groups on the DTBZ molecule cause it to have strong dipole interactions with polar molecules such as butyric acid and suzuki coupling reaction products. These properties make DTBZ an excellent candidate for optical applications in organic electronics.
