5,7-Dichlorokynurenic acid is a molecule that has been shown to inhibit the glutamate-induced neurotoxicity. It binds to the regulatory site of the ligand and inhibits the binding of glutamate to its receptor. 5,7-Dichlorokynurenic acid has been shown to protect against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's disease by inhibiting the release of calcium ions from cytosolic stores in rat brain cells. In addition, this molecule also possesses an affinity for a ligand that is different from glutamate. The affinity ligand may be d-serine, which is involved in receptor-mediated processes such as learning and memory formation.
