4'-Methoxy-1,1'-biphenyl-2-carbaldehyde is a benzene derivative that can be synthesized by the transfer of a methyl group from an enamine to a phenyl ring. It has been shown to be catalytic in the synthesis of carbon nanotubes. 4'-Methoxy-1,1'-biphenyl-2-carbaldehyde has also been used in the synthesis of biphenyls and naphthalenes. This compound reacts with olefins such as butadiene to form biradicals, which react with oxygen to form cycloaromatization products. The substituent effects on this molecule are determined by the type of substituents present on the benzene ring.
