2-Methyl-1-dodecene is a reactive molecule. It has been shown to be an effective insect pheromone and is used in the development of new insecticides. 2-Methyl-1-dodecene also reacts with terminal alkynes, aldehydes, and organometallic reagents to form substituted alkenes. The reaction products are often characterized by liquid chromatography. A kinetic study showed that the reaction rate increased with increasing temperature and pressure. This is consistent with a structural analysis that revealed that the reaction products are trisubstituted alkenes.
