Methoxyverapamil hydrochloride is a calcium channel blocker that inhibits the influx of calcium ions into cells. Methoxyverapamil hydrochloride has been shown to relax the bowel and increase the frequency of bowel movements in patients with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. It also reduces the pain associated with this condition and may be useful for other types of bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. Methoxyverapamil hydrochloride works by binding to receptors on the cytosolic side of cardiac muscle cells, thereby inhibiting receptor activity and reducing the generation of an action potential. This drug binds to metal chelates, which are compounds that bind to metals such as calcium and magnesium, preventing them from entering cells.
