It is also synthesized by the enzyme cerebroside synthase, which converts dihydrosphingenine to methyl 2-hydroxyeicosanoate. The compound is found in natural products such as cerebrosides and sphingenines, and its chemical structure can be characterized by spectroscopic data. Methyl 2-hydroxyeicosanoate is a precursor of cerebrosides, which are important components of the cell membrane. This compound may have an inhibitory effect on the deposition of cholesterol in hepatocytes, which eventually leads to liver damage.
