4-Nitrobenzyl bromoacetate is a reaction product of 4-nitrobenzyl alcohol and ethyl bromoacetate. This compound has an orientation with the nitro group in the para position, which is not observed in other compounds. The alkylation reaction between 4-nitrobenzyl bromoacetate and isatin yields a fluorescent compound that can be used as a probe for metal ions. The nitro group of this compound lowers the reactivity of the benzene ring, which makes it less reactive than many other compounds. Functional groups on this molecule include a carboxylic acid (-COOH) and alcohol (-OH). The carboxylic acid group is attached to the carbon atom at position 2 from the left, while the alcohol group is attached to carbon at position 3 from the left.
