It is a colorless liquid that is soluble in organic solvents. 2-(2-Bromophenyl)acetophenone can be prepared by the reaction of acetophenone with bromine, which yields an enolate anion and a radical anion. This reaction requires irradiation with ultraviolet light or exposure to sunlight. The monosubstituted aromatic ketones are obtained by refluxing 2-(2-bromophenyl)acetophenone in ethanol with sodium ethoxide and acetic acid as a catalyst. Yields of these reactions depend on the reactant concentrations and solvent used.
