Benzofuran is a phenolic compound that has been found to be an inhibitor of histone deacetylases (HDACs). HDAC inhibitors are thought to suppress the growth of cancerous cells, and may have anti-inflammatory properties. Benzofuran was shown to inhibit cellular proliferation in the brain with high potency. Benzofuran also inhibits HDACs, which are enzymes involved in the regulation of gene expression and cell proliferation. This inhibition leads to a decrease in acetylation of histones, which causes changes in chromatin structure and gene expression.
