It is used as a herbicide to control weeds and grasses. 1-Iodo-2-methyl-3-nitrobenzene does not affect the roots of plants but instead inhibits their growth by inhibiting enzymes involved in formylation and acylation. The inhibition of these enzymes prevents the formation of proteins necessary for cell division and plant development.
