It reacts with aryl halides and amides to give substituted pyridines. The reaction mechanism involves initial formation of an arene palladacycle that undergoes nucleophilic attack by the nucleophile, followed by elimination of chloride, to give the product amide. 2-Chloro-6-phenylpyrazine is also a starting material for the synthesis of heterocycles such as pyrazoles and pyridazines, which play important roles in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.
