The synthesis of 6-methoxyhexanoic acid can be achieved by reacting phenol with formaldehyde, followed by hydrolysis and decarboxylation. It is also used as an intermediate in the production of biodegradable polymers. The functional group is hydrophobic and exists in both the alpha- and beta-positions on the carbon chain. 6-Methoxyhexanoic acid has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which are related to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
