This reaction mechanism involves oxidation of the methyl group to form an epoxide, followed by nucleophilic attack by water on the epoxide to form an enol. The enol undergoes reductive elimination to produce the desired product. The optimal reaction conditions are achieved at 60 degrees Celsius and a pH between 5 and 7.
