Phenylsulfonylmethylbenzene is a 4-substituted phenyl derivative that is an inhibitor of the enzyme, prostaglandin synthase. It has antipyretic and antiinflammatory properties. Phenylsulfonylmethylbenzene is used to treat fever and inflammation. Inhibitors of prostaglandin synthase have been shown to block the production of prostaglandins, which are important in mediating inflammation and pain. Prostaglandins are synthesized from arachidonic acid by the action of the enzyme, prostaglandin synthase.
