3-Hydroxybenzofuran-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug that inhibits the production of prostaglandins and cytokines. It has been shown to be an effective treatment for inflammation in rats, with antiinflammatory activity comparable to diclofenac sodium. 3HBFAE also has been shown to inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNFα. The analogs of 3HBFAE, including benzofuran and anthranilic acid derivatives, have also been found to show antiinflammatory activity in animal models.
