4-Ethoxypyridine-2-carboxylic acid is an organic compound with the formula CH3COOCH2OCH2CH2CO2H. It is a colorless solid that is soluble in water and polar solvents. It has two chiral centers and can exist as four enantiomers, which may be distinguished by their differing electrophoretic mobilities. The compound is used as a precursor to other compounds such as herbicides, pharmaceuticals, and metal chelating agents. 4-Ethoxypyridine-2-carboxylic acid also has pharmacological properties that have been studied extensively. For example, it has been shown to induce apoptosis of melanoma cells in culture by inhibiting DNA synthesis and promoting the activation of caspase 3.
