2'-Nitro-2-biphenylcarboxylic acid is a nitroreductase inhibitor. It inhibits the activity of this enzyme, which is involved in the metabolism of endogenous and exogenous nitro groups. Inhibition of nitroreductase prevents conversion of nitro groups to reactive metabolites, reducing their genotoxic activity. 2'-Nitro-2-biphenylcarboxylic acid has been shown to inhibit radiation-induced liver lesions and it is a potent antioxidant that can scavenge free radicals such as superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals. This compound also blocks calcium binding sites on sarcoplasmic reticulum proteins, preventing uptake into the cell by inhibiting ion transport. Furthermore, 2'-Nitro-2-biphenylcarboxylic acid is able to bind with oxygen nucleophiles (e.g., hydrogen peroxide) to form stable products that are less reactive than their precursors.
