Goniothalamin is an iupac name that has a molecular formula of C(H2N)(O)C(H2N)O. It is a synthetic compound, which has been used as a model system for apoptosis. Goniothalamin has been shown to produce the same effects as staurosporine, such as inhibition of the mitochondrial membrane potential and induction of apoptosis. Goniothalamin also possesses anti-inflammatory activity in vitro and in vivo and has been found to be efficacious in experimental models of autoimmune diseases. The drug also inhibits squamous carcinoma cells, leading to cell death by apoptosis.
