2-Chlorothioanisole is a sulfide with molecular oxygen. It is an acrid, colorless liquid that has a pungent odor and is soluble in water. This compound can be oxidized by molecular oxygen to produce sulfoxide and sulfone. 2-Chlorothioanisole is used as a precursor for the production of other organic compounds such as pyridine, benzene, and acetonitrile. The oxidation of 2-chlorothioanisole is relatively slow, but can be increased by the addition of catalysts that are rich in sulfur or nitrogen atoms.
