Flufenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins in the body. It is used to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation caused by various conditions such as arthritis, gout or sprains. Prostaglandins are fatty acids that are produced by the body and have many functions including acting as natural painkillers. Flufenamic acid works by inhibiting an enzyme called cyclooxygenase (COX), which is responsible for producing prostaglandins. This drug also has anti-inflammatory effects that may be due to its ability to inhibit leukotrienes, histamine and cytokines.
