13(S)-Hydroperoxy-9(Z),11(E),15(Z)-octadecatrienoic acid (13HPETE) is a fatty acid produced by the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the skin. This compound has been shown to be protective against oxidative injury to cultured cells and inhibits tumor cell growth, suggesting that it may have therapeutic potential for skin cancer and other cancers. 13HPETE production is increased in response to UVB irradiation and its expression is upregulated by the presence of UVB light. The expression is dependent on the presence of oxygen, with no induction in anaerobic conditions. 13HPETE also inhibits squamous cell carcinoma cell invasion in vitro and induces apoptosis in rat cardiomyocytes.
