It can be synthesized by reacting piperidine with chloroacetic acid and hydrochloric acid. α-Pyrrolidinopropiophenone hydrochloride has the ability to dissolve metals such as lead, zinc, and nickel in dilute solutions. α-Pyrrolidinopropiophenone hydrochloride is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of surfactants and pharmaceuticals. This compound is also known to have a corrosive effect when it comes into contact with organic materials like rubber or plastic. It has been shown to be capable of oxidizing methoxy groups and can react with alcohols under acidic conditions to form enantiomers.
