(1R,3R)-1-Aminocyclobutane-1,3-dicarboxylic acid is a potent metabotropic glutamate receptor agonist that is taken up by the cell and activates the receptor. It has been shown to cause neuronal death in roundworms and cultured cells. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit the reuptake of glutamate into cells. (1R,3R)-1-Aminocyclobutane-1,3-dicarboxylic acid binds to an acid transporter on neurons and blocks the transport of extracellular glutamate into cells. This leads to low energy levels in the cell and eventually cell death.
