Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that suppresses the production of acid in the stomach. Pantoprazole has been shown to be effective for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its symptoms, including heartburn, regurgitation, and chest pain. The drug is most often prescribed as an end-of-the-day dose to prevent nighttime GERD symptoms. It has also been found to be effective in reducing inflammation at the endpoints of esophagitis. Pantoprazole is usually taken orally three times a day with water or food.
