Conophylline has also been shown to inhibit the production of epidermal growth factor, which is involved in the development of skin cancers. This drug also induces autophagy, which is an important process for cancer cell death. Conophylline may be used for treatment of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
