(4S)-Azido-L-proline hydrochloride is an inhibitor of the enzyme dopamine β-hydroxylase, which converts dopamine to norepinephrine. It has been shown to be effective in treating chronic lymphocytic leukemia and influenza virus. The drug also inhibits the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine in the kidneys and other organs, which leads to a decrease in blood pressure. (4S)-Azido-L-proline hydrochloride binds to the site specific region of the enzyme, which blocks access by substrate molecules. This binding prevents reaction with the catalytic site, inhibiting enzyme activity.
