Glycocholic acid hydrate is a bile acid that is used as a preventative for choroidal neovascularization. It is synthesized in the liver by the enzyme cholanase, which converts cholesterol to bile acids. Glycocholic acid hydrate has been shown to be an effective cell lysis agent and has been used in cell culture studies. Glycocholic acid hydrate also has low bioavailability and high toxicity, as it causes acute liver injury. This drug is not active against infectious diseases or tissue culture models of hepatitis.
