4,5-Dimethoxycanthin-6-one is a molecule that is structurally related to the benzopyrene and benzo[a]pyrene compounds. It has been shown to induce cancer in laboratory animals. The LC-MS/MS method was used to detect 4,5-dimethoxycanthin-6-one in tissue samples of humans with liver cancer. This compound is also present in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells. It has been shown to be an antiinfective agent by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and viruses. 4,5-Dimethoxycanthin-6-one has also been shown to induce tumor cell death in vitro and inhibit tumor growth in vivo.
