It is a competitive antagonist of the glucocorticoid receptor, which binds to it and blocks its function. 4-Thioanisolemagnesium bromide also has some selectivity for the progesterone receptor, but not as much as for the glucocorticoid receptor. There are many analogues of this compound, including mifepristone and dexamethasone.
