Descripción

Serpentine is a naturally occurring compound that has been shown to have effects on the nervous system. It is often used as a model system for studying the effects of drugs on the brain. Serpentine has been shown to reduce the redox potential in cells, which may be due to its ability to scavenge hydrogen peroxide. Serpentine has also been shown to inhibit the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and flavopereirine reductase, which may lead to an increase in GABA levels in the brain. Serpentine can also be found in plants and is thought to play a role in plant metabolism and plant physiology. The natural plant metabolite, monoterpenoid indole alkaloids, are thought to contribute to serpentine's toxicity by inhibiting plasma-membrane sodium-potassium ATPases and sodium-calcium exchangers.
