It may also be a risk factor for retinal detachment and optic neuropathy. The carboxylic acid groups in this compound make it soluble in water and the amino groups give it an amine odor. Thiophene-2,3-dicarbonitrile can be synthesized from naphthalene and nitroethane through the reaction of dithionite with thiophenes.
