N-(4-Bromo-2,6-dichloro-3-methylphenyl)acetamide can be prepared by halogenating acetanilide with bromine or chlorine gas in the presence of potassium carbonate and potassium iodide. It can also be synthesized by irradiating acetanilide with gamma rays. The intermediates can then be used to synthesize other types of herbicides.
