Ethyl 5-amino-1-benzyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylate is a nucleoside that is synthesized from benzylamine and potassium hydroxide. It can be used as a reagent in organic synthesis, but also has been shown to have antiviral effects. Ethyl 5-amino-1-benzyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylate inhibits the growth of human rhinovirus type 2 (HRV2) in vitro by interfering with the viral RNA synthesis. This effect is most likely due to its ability to inhibit the activity of viral polymerase and dATPase enzymes.
