Azelastine also has an inhibitory effect on the release of histamine from mast cells and other tissues. Azelastine inhibits polymorphonuclear leucocyte chemotaxis, activation, and degranulation. This drug is metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes into metabolites that are excreted in urine. Azelastine is available in both an oral form and a nasal spray form for the treatment of allergic rhinitis.
