It is also a metabolite of the drug rifampin and may be present in the blood of patients taking this drug. 8-Bromo-3,7-dihydro-3-methyl-7-(phenylmethyl)-1H -purine 2,6 dione has been found to be useful in the identification of metabolites in urine samples for the determination of therapeutic compliance and for detection of drug abuse.
